Editor's Note

This post has been updated to reflect Icelandair's current route network.

Icelandair is adding Motor City to its growing list of U.S. routes.

The national carrier of Iceland will offer seasonal flights from Detroit to Reykjavik starting May 18, 2023. These six-hour, nonstop flights will go out of Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) four times a week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through Oct. 30, 2023.

Flights will depart from Detroit at 8:30 p.m. in a 160-seat Boeing 737 MAX. Returning flights from Iceland will leave at 5 p.m. and arrive in Detroit at 6:25 p.m.

With the seasonal routes from DTW, residents of the Detroit area and folks willing to connect there will have another option for traveling to Europe. Flights from DTW to Keflavik Airport (KEF) will be nonstop. However, passengers can also connect from KEF to Greenland, the United Kingdom and continental Europe.

"These new flights will not only help meet the demands of a growing Detroit but also offer more options for Midwestern business and leisure travelers connecting from the Midwest region," said Bogi Nils Bogason, the president and CEO of Icelandair Group.

Icelandair has bolstered its U.S. presence over the past few years, adding routes in Raleigh, North Carolina, among others. In November, Icelandair and JetBlue also expanded their codeshare agreement, which entailed putting JetBlue's code on seven Icelandair routes to Europe.

Round-trip fares from Detroit to Reykjavik and other select destinations in Europe start at $499 for travel from May 18, 2023, through Oct. 30, 2023. Customers have until Dec. 24 to purchase the $499 fares and Icelandair's Saga Premium class will also be on sale, starting at $999.

"At Detroit Metropolitan Airport, we know our customers have a choice when they fly," Bogason said. "We believe nonstop flights to Iceland and the opportunity to connect to exciting cities throughout Europe are two more reasons travelers will choose DTW."
