Airlines Issue Waivers Across Florida as Hurricane Dorian Gets Closer

Now out over the open and warm waters of the Atlantic, Hurricane Dorian is primed to transform itself into a dangerous major hurricane. Although it's still days away, Florida residents need to begin preparing for a potentially catastrophic hurricane.
Travelers planning trips to -- or through -- Florida this Labor Day weekend should start looking at alternative plans. Thankfully, most US airlines now have weather waivers for Florida. These allow flexible travelers the chance to rebook on different flights or different dates without any change fees. All current airline waivers are found below.
Although currently just a Category 1 hurricane, Dorian is primed to begin a rapid intensification process as it turns west toward the Florida coast. Over the next 24 hours, Dorian's top winds are expected to accelerate from the current 85 mph up to 115 mph.
As of 5pm Thursday, the National Hurricane Center's official forecast calls for Dorian to slow down right before landfall on the Florida east coast as a Category 4 major hurricane with 130mph top sustained wind speeds.
The current NHC forecast shows landfall around Vero Beach, Florida. However, there's significant uncertainty when it comes to where Hurricane Dorian will make landfall. It's noteworthy that the "cone of uncertainty" on the official forecast encapsulates the entire Florida peninsula.
Some models currently have the hurricane not even making landfall on the Florida coast before it's swept north toward the Carolinas. That may sound positive for Florida, but Dorian could still yield significant storm surge and wind damage even without making landfall, as Hurricane Matthew did in 2016.
If the storm ends up making landfall on the east coast of Florida as a Category 4 or 5 hurricane, it would be the first hurricane to do so since 1992's Hurricane Andrew. That infamous hurricane decimated Homestead, Florida, and still stands as one of the costliest hurricanes in history, causing over $25 billion in damage.
Most US airlines have now issued weather advisories for Florida ahead of Hurricane Dorian. Alaska and Sun Country are two notable exceptions. Across all airlines, waivers currently cover 15 cities in the US Southeast and five in the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos:

If travel is not able to be rescheduled within these guidelines, customers may cancel their reservation and apply any unused value of the ticket toward the purchase of a new ticket for a period of one year from the original ticket issuance. - The change fee and any difference in fare will be waived for new United flights departing between August 29, and September 11, as long as travel is rescheduled in the originally ticketed cabin (any fare class) and between the same cities as originally ticketed.
- For wholly rescheduled travel departing after September 11, or for a change in departure or destination city, the change fee will be waived, but a difference in fare may apply. Rescheduled travel must be completed within one year from the date when the ticket was issued.
Protect Your Travels
Hurricane Dorian is another reminder to book flights with a card that offers solid trip delay and cancellation insurance. When I got stuck in Japan for four extra days due to a typhoon, I was very grateful for the Citi Prestige’s trip delay protection, which reimbursed $1,000 of our expenses.
Unfortunately Trip Delay Protection is being eliminated on the Citi Prestige -- and all other Citi cards -- for flights booked on or after September 22, 2019. Starting then, I'll be using my Chase Sapphire Reserve to book my flights going forward. Other top choices are the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite Card -- which each offer protection starting with a 6-hour delay. In addition, there are six other cards where the protections kick in after a 12-hour delay.
