Frontier Airlines adds 7 nonstop routes; Pittsburgh and DFW among big winners
Editor's Note
Frontier Airlines announced seven new routes on Thursday, with Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Dallas-Fort Worth emerging as big winners in the news.
Pittsburgh landed four new routes, three of which fly to major hubs of rival legacy carriers.
Among those is Philadelphia, where Frontier will add an intra-Pennsylvania route that will go up against American Airlines; American operates a fortress hub across the state in The City of Brotherly Love.
Frontier also will fly from Pittsburgh to another of American's fortress hubs — Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) — and to Atlanta, the top Delta Air Lines hub. Southwest also flies from Pittsburgh to Atlanta and Dallas, though its flights are to Dallas Love Field (DAL).
With Frontier's fourth route from Pittsburgh — to Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) — the ultra-low-cost carrier will go up against both American and budget startup Breeze.
Frontier has served two of its just-announced Pittsburgh routes previously, according to schedule data from Cirium. The airline last flew between Atlanta and Pittsburgh in 2016; it briefly flew between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in May and June of 2020, during the depths of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, DFW landed two new routes in Frontier's expansion, with flights to Jacksonville, Florida, joining the route to Pittsburgh.
Cleveland landed just one new route in Frontier's announcement, but the service to Montego Bay, Jamaica, is noteworthy in that it will give the Ohio airport a new international destination. Frontier will be the only carrier flying the route.
Introductory fares on the new routes begin as low as $19 one-way, though Frontier charges extra for nearly everything beyond a spot on the plane.
