Credit card issuers have long sought to expand their reach beyond just being methods of payment (and a way to earn rewards on your purchases). The last few years have seen a flurry of product updates that push card products beyond travel and into lifestyle offerings — including shopping, dining, entertainment and even insurance benefits.

And now, Capital One is announcing yet another new perk for cardholders.

Starting tomorrow, March 24, the issuer will bring “Capital One Entertainment” to life — an all-new online ticketing platform that allows cardholders to find and redeem their rewards for tickets to more than 500,000 events.

This is yet another new offering from a card issuer that has — in the last six months alone — refreshed its travel portal (including features like automatic price drop protection), launched a lucrative premium product (the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card) and delivered a new dining platform.

Let’s take a look at how this new platform plays out, helping you decide whether this new redemption option is a good use of your hard-earned Capital One miles.

Capital One Entertainment is a new platform available to any Capital One rewards cardholder. You can visit this digital-only platform via the Capital One mobile app or on Capital One’s website.

Powered by Vivid Seats, you’ll be able to search for thousands of experiences near you, whether it’s games, concerts or dining events.

At checkout, you can pay with your Capital One card or use your rewards … or a combination of both.

But, the redemption rate will depend on the card you carry.

For cards within the Venture family (Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card), you can use your miles at a rate of 0.8 cents each.

In other words, a $100 ticket through Capital One Entertainment would cost 12,500 miles, which isn’t necessarily the best value.

Remember that you can always redeem your miles for 1 cent apiece to cover travel purchases, but if you utilize the program’s array of transfer partners, you can get even more value. In fact, TPG’s valuations put Capital One miles at 1.85 cents each when used in this way.

But, for any of Capital One’s cash back card, such as the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card or the Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card, you can redeem your cash back rewards at a (more favorable) rate of 1 cent each – so that same $100 ticket would cost you $100 in cash back rewards.

And don’t forget that cardholders of the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card and the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card already earn a whopping 8% cash back on Vivid Seats ticket purchases — which will also go into effect for Capital One Entertainment purchases moving forward, cementing these cards as some of the best for entertainment spending.

The information for the Capital One Savor has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Access to cardholder-exclusive events

If you’re looking to elevate your experience, be sure to check out the “Cardholder Exclusives” tab, where you’ll be able to redeem your rewards for specially curated, premium event packages just for Capital One cardholders.

And here, having a higher-tier card can really pay off.

Venture X cardholders get even better access to redemption opportunities on Capital One Entertainment, where you can redeem certain packages (that aren’t available to other Capital One cardholders) for 100,000 miles.

Here are a few examples of upcoming events available to Venture X cardholders only:

  • NCAA Men’s Final Four Weekend in New Orleans, April 1-4, 2022: Two suite seats, passes to Capital One JamFest and Men’s Final Four Fan Fest presented by Capital One.
  • iHeartCountry Festival in Austin, Texas, May 7, 2022: Premium tickets and access to a sound check with headliner Thomas Rhett.

These premium packages may actually be worth considering. For instance, you can get two suite-level seats for the NCAA Men’s Final Four for 100,000 miles. With each suite-level seat currently priced at least $600 each (before taxes and fees), these 100,000-mile packages can bring tremendous value for your Capital One rewards.

Bottom line

As the pandemic wanes and in-person events are coming back better than ever, Capital One Entertainment may be coming at a perfect time — and the issuer promises that the initial slate of offerings is just the beginning.

Stay tuned for other experiences added to the platform throughout the year, such as tickets to Capital One’s Orange Bowl, the NCAA college football championship, James Beard Foundation events and more.
