Quick summary

Avelo Airlines has no plans to slow its fast growth in Connecticut after the calendar flips to 2025.

The Houston-based ultra-low-cost carrier plans to add four new U.S. airports to its route map early next year, the airline announced Monday.

Between February and May 2025, Avelo will launch service from two large hub airports, a prime Florida city and a popular New England destination. Each of those routes will originate from Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN), the tiny southern Connecticut airport that's become the biggest growth hub for the young airline.

Meanwhile, Avelo is also expanding its fledgling international footprint, with nonstop service from Hartford to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic — an announcement that comes less than a week after the carrier first revealed its plans to serve the Caribbean destination from North Carolina.

In all, it's a five-route expansion for Avelo — all from Connecticut, a state that's become central to its growth plans, not to mention home to one of the hottest turf battles in the U.S. airline industry.

"We love Connecticut and are excited to continue expanding our presence here," Avelo CEO Andrew Levy said in a statement Monday.

Avelo's 5 new routes

DFW and Detroit are both major hubs for large network airlines — DFW being the home base for American Airlines, and Detroit a core hub for Delta Air Lines. However, Avelo won't have any direct competition to worry about on those routes; New Haven will be an entirely new destination for each of those airports.

It's a similar story for Jacksonville and Portland, each a popular destination for travelers on vacation, or visiting friends or relatives.

Growing in Connecticut, and abroad

Altogether, this latest New Haven expansion for Avelo gives it 39 nonstop destinations from the small regional airport — a facility where it's been the lone carrier, at least until Breeze Airways launches its own New Haven service this week.

On the international front, Avelo's new Punta Cana service unveiled Monday expands its budding international footprint.

By next spring, the airline will fly five international nonstop routes, including three from Hartford: Punta Cana, Cancun International Airport (CUN) and Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Avelo last week said it would also fly to Punta Cana and Montego Bay from Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU).
