Avelo Airlines adds 3 new cities in 13-route expansion
Avelo Airlines is growing its footprint with three new cities announced Tuesday as part of a broader 13-route expansion.
The budget carrier will add two new domestic airports — New York's Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) and Michigan's Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) near Grand Rapids — as well as a new international airport in the Bahamas — Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) in the capital of Nassau — to its route map.
From ISP, Avelo will launch three new routes from late May into June. Located about 50 miles east of Midtown Manhattan near the town of Islip, the airport draws passengers from across Long Island and the eastern suburbs of New York City. Avelo's service will connect the airport to Lakeland, Florida, and the North Carolina airports in Concord (near Charlotte) and Wilmington.
Bargain hunting: The best time to book flights for the cheapest airfare
Avelo's Grand Rapids debut will feature two routes: Raleigh, North Carolina, and Lakeland.
Elsewhere, Avelo will beef up offerings across five of its focus cities, with a heavy focus on North Carolina.
Wilmington International Airport (ILM) landed four new routes, including a 1,068-mile nonstop to Houston's William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) — the longest in Tuesday's announcement. With the addition of the three other routes (full details below), Avelo will fly nonstop from ILM to 15 destinations.
At Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (USA), which is roughly 20 miles away from uptown Charlotte, Avelo will offer 11 nonstop routes, including new service to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), ISP and Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C.
And at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), Avelo is adding three new routes to its base there, where it will fly nonstop to 10 destinations. Among the new offerings from RDU are flights to NAS, Avelo's new destination in the Bahamas.
What to know: Avelo's first loyalty program is coming ... but so are change fees
Outside North Carolina, Avelo is adding two new routes from Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL) — giving it a total of nine there — and one from Delaware's Wilmington Airport (ILG) near Philadelphia, where it will have a total of 14 nonstop destinations.
