Aeromexico announced a major U.S. expansion, revealing plans to add a whopping 17 new cross-border routes.

The expansion will see the Mexican flag carrier add new flights from seven different airports in Mexico to nine destinations in the U.S. Aeromexico did not reveal launch dates for the new service, saying only that it will "gradually introduce" the new routes beginning in January 2024.

All of the new flights also will carry the "DL" code of joint-venture partner Delta Air Lines, which features heavily in the expansion. Fourteen of Aeromexico's new routes are to Delta's hub cities — including five new routes to Atlanta and four to Detroit.

From Mexico, Aeromexico is adding four new routes from both Mexico City's main airport and from Monterrey in the country's northeast.

Also included in Aeromexico's expansion are two routes from Mexico City's new — and distant — secondary airport, Mexico City Felipe Angeles International Airport (NLU), which sits about 25 miles from Mexico City's central core. For reference, Mexico City's main Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) is about 5 miles from the city center.

Both of Aeromexico's new routes from NLU will be to airports that are not hubs for Delta: the Texas cities of Dallas-Fort Worth and McAllen. The only other new route in the expansion that's not to a Delta hub city will be Aeromexico's capital-to-capital route from MEX to Dulles International Airport (IAD).

The new routes come after the U.S. government upgraded Mexico's air safety rating to Category 1. The U.S. had downgraded Mexico's air safety rating to Category 2 back in 2021, a move that came with a prohibition on new service by Mexican carriers to U.S. airports. Now that the Category 1 rating has been restored, Mexican carriers are again free to add new routes to the U.S.
