If you love points-friendly resorts that offer something for all members of the family then The Phoenician, A SPG Luxury Collection Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, may fit the bill nicely. We visited the resort in May of this year using a combination SPG points and a cash upgrade to score a large suite.

You can read all about how and why we selected the resort, as well as get a detailed look at our suite in this post.

Since I was super pregnant at the time and we only had a short weekend to work with, we didn't leave the resort from the time we arrived until it was time to go home. Our meals and entertainment were all centered around what the resort had to offer - which as expected was more than enough to keep us happy for the weekend!

I decided to divide the resort amenities up into two posts and dedicate this post entirely to the pools because truthfully they are the crown jewel of the resort - especially given that the average high in the summer can go over 100 degrees!

The Phoenician Mother of Pearl Pool

The Phoenician Surge Splash Pad:

With little kids, pools are nice, but splash pads can sometimes be even better since you don't have to stress as much when kids are of the age that they are still learning how to safely swim. This hotel has a large and well-designed splash pad that even has surrounding shaded cabanas.

The splash pad is also within eye-shot of a hot tub and walk-up bar/food area, which is genius in my opinion.

The Phoenician Water Slide:

My daughter's favorite feature at the resort was the 165 foot water slide! When she made a friend who would run quickly walk up and do the slide with her we were all in heaven!

The slide requires that kids be 42 inches tall to ride and did not permit "doubles", so parents can't go down holding their kids. Normally the slide is just open during the day from 10:30AM - 5PM, but a couple of days of the week it was kept open late for "night sliding" until 9PM.

The slide truly was perfect for our five year old, and I would guess that it would be a big winner for most in the 4 - 10 year old range!

The Phoenician Mother of Pearl Main Pool:

The hotel has nine total pools, but my personal favorite was their iconic mother of pearl pool named for the very smooth and comfortable mother of pearl bottom.

If you have ever spent significant time swimming in a pool with a somewhat rough bottom you know what that can do to your feet, but this pool was heavenly with it's super smooth and shiny design.

There are many cabanas surrounding this pool, but I'll warn you that they go for several hundred dollars per day. We passed on that pricey amenity this time around since there were plenty of chairs and umbrellas that met our needs just fine. However, if you have the cash to spare here is what the cabanas look like - they also come with some fruit, beverages, and a server.

Other Phoenician Pools:

In addition to the splash pad and mother of pearl pool shown above, there are multiple other pools ranging from a very shallow baby pool to activity pools to an adult pool.

As you can tell from the photos, the heated pools were not over-crowded on our mid-May visit, though they did get a bit more active as the day wore on. Still, they were never over-crowded on our visit, and we were able to have lots of fun without bothering anyone.

In the evening one of the upper-level pools was even utilized to show movies via a temporary screen!

During the day they had some activities in the pools that include a rubber duck race, a water bucket challenge, frozen t-shirt race, volleyball games, and more. While we passed on those activities, we did take advantage of being able to order poolside snacks and eat at the poolside Oasis Pool Bar and Grill.

The prices at the grill weren't terrible for resort prices. For example, the child's smoothie C enjoyed was $2.25, the summer roll shown above was $7, and the hummus/veggie plate shown was $13. These may not be "cheap" prices, but they were more reasonable than expected.

The Phoenician Koi Pond:

While not exactly a pool itself, right next to the pool complex is a koi pond where you can participate in fish feeding in the mornings.

Believe it or not, the pools are only the beginning of what the resort offers. In the next post I'll show you the kid's club, playground, tennis courts, and more!

If you want to stay here using some of the points earned from via the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card or Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card note that the resort is currently 20,000 points per night on points or 10,000 points + $180/night via a cash and points rate. I also recommend simply checking cash rates as during some times of the year you may get better deals that way rather than using valuable SPG points.

If you have visited this resort I'd love to hear what you thought of the pool complex!
