Earlier this year, JetBlue ran a buy points promo that offered up to a 75% bonus for TrueBlue members — that same bonus opp has returned. JetBlue is targeting TrueBlue members with a bonus of 40%, 50% or 75% when they buy points between now and October 14, 2016.

The current promo is tiered, so the more points you purchase the larger the bonus will be. It's likely that the 75% purchase structure matches the last promotion (which can be found here), but all TPG staffers were targeted with a maximum 40% bonus this time around, so we're unable to confirm. The breakdown is as follows for the 40% bonus:

  • 1,000 points = $37.63
  • 8,000 points + 1,600 bonus points = $270.90
  • 15,500 points + 4,650 bonus points = $463.22
  • 22,500 points + 6,750 bonus points = $665.16
  • 30,000 points + 12,000 bonus points = $886.88

TrueBlue points usually cost between 2.9-3.7 cents apiece with a 7.5% tax recovery fee. If you maximize the 75% bonus (if it's the same as the last promotion) by purchasing 30,000 points, the per-point cost goes down to about 1.7 cents including taxes. Note that you can only purchase a maximum of 30,000 points per transaction for all tiers of the promotion, and no more than 60,000 points in a calendar year.

I was targeted with a 40% bonus.

According to TPG's most recent valuations, JetBlue TrueBlue points are worth 1-1.4 cents apiece. The exact value fluctuates a bit, as JetBlue's awards are based on cash fares, but we dive in a bit deeper in our post covering JetBlue's identical promotion from June. Remember that JetBlue's buy points transactions are processed by Points.com, so you won't earn any category bonuses for airfare or travel — especially the lucrative 3x travel bonus with the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

If you're looking to top off your TrueBlue account more, consider signing up for the JetBlue Plus Card. The card comes with a sign-up bonus of 30,000 points after you spend $1,000 in the first 90 days. You'll earn 6x points on JetBlue purchases, 2x points at restaurants and grocery stores and 1x points on all other purchases. Each account anniversary, you'll earn 5,000 bonus points, and there are no foreign transaction fees.
