Sample flights

We found some great deals on international travel. Air Canada has several redemption examples on the sale page, including a round-trip flight from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Athens International Airport (ATH) for 51,700 points and $348 Canadian dollars ($245) in taxes and fees. Based on TPG's valuations, Aeroplan points are worth 1.5 cents each, making this redemption worth $1,020.50, including taxes and fees.

If you are looking for a more tropical locale, we also spotted this one-way deal from YYZ to Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) in the Bahamas for 9,200 Aeroplan points and $150 CAD (about $105) in taxes and fees. Per TPG valuations, this redemption is worth $243, including taxes and fees. When we checked fares outside of the sale period, similar flights regularly go for 10,000 points or more.

These prices are for standard reward economy redemptions, which do not include seat selection or checked bags. However, you can upgrade to a Flex Reward that includes these benefits. Or, you could opt for a business-class seat, which is also included in this sale.
Maximize your purchase
If you want to make the most of this deal, you may want to consider the Aeroplan® Credit Card(see rates and fees). Among other benefits, you'll get perks like your first checked bag free as well as up to $120 in statement credit to use toward Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or Nexus every four years.
Cardholders also receive automatic Aeroplan 25K status during the calendar year when they open the card; this includes perks like priority check-in, security and boarding, two one-time passes to Air Canada's Maple Leaf Lounges, automatic Star Alliance Silver elite status and more.
You'll also earn an introductory bonus of up to 100,000 points: 75,000 points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening and another 25,000 points after spending $20,000 in the first 12 months from account opening — which you can use for future flight redemptions.
Alternatively, you can use a card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, such as:
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees): 2 points per dollar spent on travel
- American Express® Gold Card: 3 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly through the airline or amextravel.com
- The Platinum Card® from American Express: 5 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly through the airline or American Express Travel® (on up to $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar)
- Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees): 8 points per dollar on all Chase Travel℠ purchases and 4 points per dollar on all flights booked directly
Bottom line
Because the sale price varies with this deal, you'll want to compare the cash price to the redemption value to determine how good the discount really is and whether you'd be better off using cash or points.
But if you've been stashing away your Aeroplan points for a special trip, the time to act is now. You only have until Sunday to book this deal before it flies away.
