Here's another free and easy way to earn miles for something you're already doing. BP has partnered with United to offer bonus MileagePlus miles on every gas purchase, plus a 200-mile bonus just for signing up for the program.

The bonus miles are a new option in BP's Driver Rewards program, which normally offers 10 cents off each gallon for every $100 spent on BP fuel. To enroll, you can sign up here and choose whether you want to earn BP's Cents Per Gallon or United MileagePlus miles. If you choose United miles, you'll receive a 200-mile bonus after you link your credit or debit card and make a purchase at BP.

The earning rates vary depending on what type of BP purchases you make and whether you're using a linked debit or credit card:

  • 1 United mile for every gallon of fuel purchased.
  • 2 United miles for every gallon of fuel purchased with your linked debit or credit card.
  • 3 United miles for every gallon of premium-grade fuel purchased with your linked debit or credit card.

Note that you can only earn miles on a maximum of 20 gallons per transaction.

While not the most lucrative program in the world, it's still better than nothing, especially since activity in your United account extends the expiration date on all your United miles. You can also stack this promotion with cash back or bonus points earned from your credit card. The Citi Premier® Card earns 3 ThankYou points per dollar on all travel purchases, which uniquely includes gas stations. The card is also currently offering a 50,000 sign-up bonus after spending $4,000 in the first three months. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express and the Bank of America Cash Rewards credit card are also solid options when you fuel up, with both offering 3% back on gas purchases*.

Once enrolled, you'll also be able to redeem 60 United miles to get 50 cents off a gallon of BP gasoline. But, that's about 0.83 cents per mile, whereas TPG values United miles at 1.4 cents apiece, so you definitely won't get a lot of value redeeming United miles this way. Better to stick to earning them at BP rather than burning them there.
