The 2019 TPG Awards are in the books, and the second-annual ceremony was a night to remember as we honored the best of the best in travel, loyalty and credit cards. A total of 31 awards were handed out celebrating everything TPG represents: Helping travelers get the most value for their points and money, while highlighting the brands that make travel enjoyable. Beverley Bass was born in Ft. Myers, Florida. She grew up showing quarter horses with her family but always knew she wanted to fly. She enrolled in a flight school at Meacham Airport and got her first job while still in school flying for a Ft. Worth mortician. In 1976, she was hired by American as it’s third female pilot, then went on to become their first female captain a decade later. The Broadway musical “Come From Away” was written about her experience piloting one of the 38 planes that landed in Gander, Newfoundland during 9/11. She currently lives in Argyle, TX and is married with two children, with her daughter continuing her legacy as an American Eagle pilot.
Mathematician and computer scientist Katherine Johnson was born in 1918 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. She studied at West Virginia State University, where she was one of the first African Americans to enroll in the mathematics program. In 1953, she joined Langley Research Center as a research mathematician for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). Her calculations proved critical to the success of the Apollo Moon landing program and the start of the Space Shuttle program. On November 24, 2015, she received the nation's highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, from President Barack H. Obama.
