Here's how to do Alaska right

by Gene Sloan, Cruise Team Lead

Hi TPG readers! I’m Gene Sloan, TPG’s head of cruise content, and I’m taking over the Daily newsletter today to talk a little with you about cruising. Specifically, Alaska cruising.

Even if you don’t think you’re a cruising sort of person, you should seriously consider an Alaska cruise — or a longer Alaska cruisetour — as the way you see Alaska. And I’m saying that as someone who has spent years touring Alaska in all sorts of ways on land and sea, including by car, train, plane, big ships, small ships and even ferries.

Alaska is a big place with relatively few people, limited infrastructure and lots of hard-to-reach wilderness — all factors that make it difficult to visit as an independent traveler, especially if you want to see a broad cross-section of its most famous sights in a single trip.

A cruise makes it easy.

That’s one reason roughly two-thirds of the 3 million or so people who visit Alaska every year travel by cruise ship.

Cruising to Alaska is also, quite simply, an amazing experience. No matter which cruise vessel you pick, you’ll likely get up close to Alaska’s mightiest glaciers, observe some of its famous wildlife (hello whales and bears!) and visit fascinating coastal towns such as gold rush hub Skagway.

All that said, you want to be sure to pick the right ship and itinerary for you. The good news is that we have a lot of advice on the subject here at TPG — advice that we’ve been rolling out all month long in a series of more than 25 new and updated Alaska cruise guides that make up our second annual Alaska Cruise Month. Among them:

Head to our new Alaska Cruise Month hub to see many more.

Also, don’t miss my colleague Summer Hull’s personal tale of sailing the newest, biggest ship in Alaska and why she loved it so much.

Meanwhile, if you’re interested in learning more about cruising, be sure you’re signed up for TPG’s biweekly cruise newsletter, which highlights great cruises you’ll want to try, new ships and itineraries, how to get deals and more.
