“Well, I guess we’ll be showering in shifts,” I said, eyeing the all-glass wall with an unobstructed view into the bathroom … of the hotel room I was sharing with my mother.
We weren’t at an avant-garde design hotel or some out-of-the-way budget chain. We were spending two nights at one of Rome’s fanciest luxury hotels. And for some reason, they thought anyone in this room would not care a whit for privacy.
That’s just one of the many confounding hotel design choices I’ve encountered in recent years. So-called peekaboo bathrooms have become the rage, though I don’t know anyone who wants to put on a show while performing their ablutions.
I’ve also seen a growing number of bathtubs in the middle of rooms reminiscent of seedy roadside motels or 19th-century New York City tenements. Who wants to splash around and get the bed wet?
Apparently, hoteliers think no one needs a work desk in their room anymore, either … or an actual closet for that matter. I can’t count the number of hours I’ve wasted trying to figure out complicated panels with switches for everything from the lights to electronic shades to climate control, too. And there’s always that one pesky light in the corner I can’t manage to turn off. I suppose that’s what eye masks are for.
For every terrible design choice, though, I also see plenty of thoughtful, elegant ones, and I always look at a hotel stay as an opportunity for home decor inspiration. (I’m typing this in my Four Seasons bed, if you must know) But if I ever install a half-glassed-in shower at home, something has gone terribly wrong.
