After all, I’ve had merchants not accept this issuer’s cards countless times. And, especially in Australia, merchants may set their credit card surcharges based on the card type you use.
But I’ve also seen merchants offer discounts when you use a specific card type. For example, the Valle Nevado ski resort in Chile offers discounts when you pay with a card on this major network. And a hospital I visited in Malaysia gave a discount on health screenings when I paid with a card on its rival network.
I also recently had my cobranded hotel credit card fail to work when checking into a hotel in Thailand. The card still didn’t work even after three calls to the issuer, but luckily, I had another card I could use.
So, while you may not want to always carry all your cards, it’s smart to have a few in your purse, pocket or digital wallet.
