I’ve written before about my simplified credit card strategy. I put most of my spending on the same card and watch the miles I earn pile up.
For me, it’s easier than keeping track of several cards, especially when that card has a reasonable annual fee of $395 and earns 2 miles per dollar on everyday purchases, and even more on eligible travel purchases.
Right now, I’m sitting on what I like to think of as a pretty healthy stack of Capital One miles. Naturally, it’s got me thinking about how I can use those miles to plan a dream vacation.
I did a little research on the best ways to use Capital One miles, and the ideas I came up with were too good to keep to myself, so let’s take a look at a few of the most valuable redemptions I came across:
We’re going to Disneyland! Because theme park hotels don’t participate in any major hotel loyalty programs, I can book a stay at the Disneyland Hotel through the Capital One Travel portal at a fixed rate of 1 cent per mile. The price in the travel portal is usually the same as when you book directly, so this is my favorite way to reduce the out-of-pocket cost of my Disney trips.
Transfer for greater value: Capital One miles can be transferred to more than 15 airline and hotel partners, including Air France-KLM Flying Blue. I found premium economy seats between New York and Paris for 30,000 miles each way (plus taxes and fees). The same flight was more than 90,000 miles when booked through Capital One. Booking through the travel portal doesn’t always guarantee the highest redemption value.
All-inclusive getaway: Capital One miles also transfer to hotel partners like Wyndham Rewards at a 1:1 ratio. I can turn around and use those Wyndham Rewards points to book all-inclusive resorts like Grand Palladium Jamaica, All Inclusive Resort & Spa or Kunuku Resort All Inclusive Curacao, Trademark by Wyndham starting at 15,000 points per night.
If you don’t yet have a card that earns Capital One miles, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card (my favorite) is offering new cardholders 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
Or, if you are in the market for a lower-annual-fee card, the $95-annual-fee Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is currently offering the same 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening to new cardholders.
