I’ve seen so many people on social media with questions about moving abroad or getting residency and citizenship in the EU, so I wanted to share my personal experience with you.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, my travel wanderlust was at an all-time high, and I daydreamed about being an EU resident.
And now, six years later, I am one, thanks to my investment and participation in Portugal’s Golden Visa program. Here’s an update on my experience and some tips if you plan to apply for a Golden Visa program in the future.
How the process started
Back in 2020, I invested €350,000 in the Renaissance Hotel Porto through Portugal’s Golden Visa program, and shortly thereafter, in 2021, I was granted Portuguese residency.
Although it’s not mandatory to work with a team on your paperwork and investments, I chose to do so, working with the Mercan Group. Taxes, fees, bureaucracy and paperwork can be confusing and a big hassle, and I’ve found having their help with the process has been invaluable.
Since then, I’ve had to spend approximately a week in Portugal each year to keep my residency active and be eligible for citizenship. I’ve really enjoyed my annual week-long vacations in Lisbon or the Algarve (see below for more Portugal travel content).
Next steps
My citizenship paperwork was submitted and accepted in 2025, but due to a large backlog and program changes, it may take a while to be processed, and I still have to take and pass a Portuguese language exam.
I didn’t do this for investment or tax purposes; it was a lifestyle decision — I wanted the flexibility to live and work in the European Union in the future, should I choose to do so. I also wanted to give my children the same gift.
My tips for pursuing a Golden Visa
Don’t wait — programs change all the time. Had I waited, I would have had to wait 10 years now instead of the five before submitting my application for citizenship.
Work with a reputable agency that understands the rules and legal requirements.
Find a program and a country that works best for you and your family.
