There are many reasons American Airlines AAdvantage is my top U.S. airline loyalty program, but the piece de resistance remains its redemption sweet spots — and boy, are they sweet. It seems no matter where I’m looking to travel, this program always has the best deals.
Here are some examples that I found just now (all prices are one-way, plus taxes and fees):
- Domestic? Short-haul flights normally start at 7,500 AAdvantage miles for economy, but right now (even after the end of AAdvantage’s recent award sale), they’re priced even lower! I’m talking flights from Washington, D.C., to Portland, Maine, for just 5,000 miles, or from Los Angeles to Bozeman, Montana, for just 6,000 miles.
- Europe? Flights to places like Madrid, Barcelona, Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam and more start at just 17,500 miles for economy, or 57,500 miles for business class.
- 🌴 Caribbean? Flights from East Coast hubs to places like the Dominican Republic, Aruba and St. Maarten currently start at 7,500 miles for economy, or 20,000 miles for business class.
Plus, in the last few months, it’s gotten a lot easier to earn a big stash of these previously hard-to-earn miles, thanks to AAdvantage’s expanded partnership with Citi and new card products like:
Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard®. For a limited time, new cardholders can earn 90,000 bonus miles after spending $5,000 on purchases within the first four months from account opening.
- This brand-new cobranded card is kind of a sweet spot unto itself, offering a few premium perks — like four Admirals Club passes each year, a companion certificate and boosts toward status — but without charging a premium annual fee.
Citi Strata Elite℠ Card. For a limited time, new cardholders can earn 100,000 bonus points after spending $6,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
- Not only does Citi’s latest premium travel card come with really strong earning rates and a solid $1,100 in annual travel and lifestyle credits, but this limited-time 100,000-point offer is a whopping 20,000 points (aka two round-trip domestic flights) higher than the prior bonus!
If you want to start taking AAdvantage (ha, see what I did there?) of this program’s fantastic sweet spots, either of these cards is a great first move.
