I’m flipping through the pages of my passport as I greet you this morning, admiring some of the newest stamps 2025 has brought me, including Greenland, Japan and, most recently, Panama.
But before you can reach your next big overseas destination, there are some things you need to know about your passport.
The six-month rule: A lot of countries won’t let you in if your passport is too close to expiring. Don’t assume that you’re OK to travel with it just because it’s still valid — you need some cushion on that expiration date.
How long does it take to renew? For years during the pandemic, wait times for passport renewals were astronomical. Fortunately, things have gotten better. But it still may take several weeks, so you’ll want to plan ahead if you’re renewing — and not cut it too close before an international trip.
