Hello and happy Sunday! As a Louisvillian I’m at home relaxing after the opening night at Churchill Downs because I no longer have the patience to deal with the crowds at the track (or the desire to pay $20 for a mint julep).
I hope you are taking the day to rest and recharge, too.
Congratulations are in order before we get into the top stories: Last week, TPG’s YouTube series Airplane Mode won a Webby Award for Best Travel and Lifestyle Series. Go check it out!
I’m still holding a bit of a grudge against Southwest Airlines amid the upcoming changes, but I may be more forgiving if I can get into one of the airline’s new extra-legroom seats. Of course, you’ll have to pay more for these seats when Southwest drops open seating. But during this “soft launch” period, they’ll be free for those who board early enough to snag one.
If you’ve traveled recently, you may have been surprised that you didn’t have to remove liquids or electronics from your bag in the standard Transportation Security Administration screening lane. That is thanks to new computed tomography X-ray machines designed to streamline the security process.
Because the routine differs from what travelers are used to, some say the new machines are slowing down the process of getting through security. This is likely just a learning curve. Once travelers adjust and more security lanes adopt the new machines, my guess is passengers will actually spend less time at the security checkpoint.
