Whether you’re a person who plans your trips around outdoor adventure or, like me, a person who prefers to see the great outdoors through a car window, national parks have something for everyone.
But if you were hoping to knock a national park (or four) off your bucket list this summer, you may be scrambling to change those plans. A combination of travelers looking for more budget-friendly options and cuts to national park staff this year could mean more crowds — and fewer people to manage them.
The good news? You can get similar great outdoors vibes from many state parks.
Sure, there’s only one Grand Canyon, but if you’re chasing waterfalls, cacti or canyons, there’s a state park that has what you’re looking for.
I got to spend some time in one of them — Silver Falls State Park — when I was in Oregon a few weeks ago. I haven’t been to Yellowstone or Yosemite, so I can’t verify how good of a dupe it is for either of those, but I was impressed to learn that hikers can chase down 10 waterfalls on its 7.2-mile trail. And as a nonhiker, I loved that I got to see an impressive waterfall just by walking a short distance from the car to an overlook.
