As TPG’s senior hotel reporter, I love different hotels for different reasons, and some you just can’t compare.
For example, the absolutely stunning St. Regis Venice in Italy is one of the best St. Regis properties in the world and one of my favorite hotels in Europe. So is the ultracharming Casa Monti Roma, a boutique hotel in Rome. One you can book with points, will pick you up by boat when you land at the airport and features a larger-than-life lobby that doubles as an art museum with works by the likes of Ai Weiwei. The other is dotted with tchotchkes that will captivate you for hours before you aimlessly stroll Rome’s cobblestone streets to reach its ancient Colosseum.
But my favorite hotels all have one thing in common: They make me feel like I belong — whether it’s the best points redemption of my life or a cash stay I worked long and hard to save up for. It’s remembering my name as I come and go or receiving a friendly smile and a “good morning” from the breakfast attendant putting out batter and heating up waffle irons at an interstate hotel on a road trip.
As restauranter Danny Meyer says, hospitality is something that happens for you, not something that happens to you. And those are the moments we look for when we suggest hotels here at TPG.
But if you really want to know, a few of my favorite hotels are: Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, Hoi An, Vietnam; The Dive Motel, a fabulously divey property in Nashville where every room has a party switch that activates a disco ball; the Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana, an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic you can book with World of Hyatt points; and New York’s iconic hotel The Plaza, which is more about how incredible it made my dog feel, as you can see above.
