Hello, TPG readers. I’m travel news reporter Tarah Chieffi, and I’ll be here with you for the next week. As you are reading this, I am probably playing “teacher” for my three kids as we weather another snowstorm-related e-learning day. Since you probably already know your basic addition and subtraction facts, I’m going to focus on another, more relevant, topic: common passport mistakes.
If you are planning an international trip this year, you’ve hopefully already applied for a passport or pulled out your current passport to check the expiration date. If not, this isn’t something you want to procrastinate on.
If you are applying for the first time, renewing a child’s passport or making changes to your passport information, you must do so in person. You will need to build in time to make an appointment and visit a passport acceptance facility in person.
If you plan to travel internationally within the next two months, you should opt for expedited service to be on the safe side. If you have international travel planned within the next two weeks, the U.S. Department of State offers a limited number of in-person appointments for urgent international travel if you meet specific requirements.
Even if you know your passport won’t expire until well after your trip ends, each country has its own passport validity rules, with some requiring that your passport be valid for up to six months after your travel dates.
If you are snowed in like me, take a few minutes to read these other helpful passport stories:
I’ll see you back here tomorrow, or you can follow along with me on Instagram and X to see where my passport takes me next.
