From Oktoberfest in Munich to concerts around the world, some of my most memorable trips have been to attend specific events. Even if the event is in high demand, there are often ways to use points and miles to save money.
I’ve attended Oktoberfest twice now, and redeemed points for my hotels both times. Although hotels are at high occupancy during Oktoberfest, you can usually find some modestly priced award options. For example, I booked a five-night stay at the Courtyard Munich City East for 96,500 Marriott points to attend Oktoberfest last year.
Hotels are even easier to snag at a good rate for smaller events, such as concerts. This is especially true if you book a hotel that isn’t within walking distance of the event. However, if you’re able to snag a reservation with free cancellation, consider doing so and then periodically checking for better options. After all, room blocks may be released and other travelers may cancel their plans as the event date nears.
