My American Express Membership Rewards points took me to Chile, Argentina, Mexico and Italy in 2024.
But even if you set aside (for a moment) the Amex points I redeemed — like the 15,000 points for a flight to Europe on Air France — I’d estimate I logged at least $1,800 in savings just by carrying The Platinum Card® from American Express.
No doubt: The $695 annual fee (see rates and fees) stung when it hit my account for the third year in a row this past summer, but the card easily earned another year in my wallet through the many savings and perks it offers.
I fully maximized the card’s monthly Uber Cash, digital entertainment and Walmart+ credits*, which offset some routine costs I’d have otherwise incurred. And I let my $199 Clear Plus membership renew thanks to the statement credit the card offers, essentially offsetting the cost of the service.
To use my annual $200 hotel statement credit, I booked a prepaid stay through Amex Travel at the W hotel in Santiago, Chile, featuring stunning views of the Andes Mountains — and, while on the property, enjoyed a $100 discount on one of the best dinners my wife and I had all year, thanks to the perks of Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts.
And, a kicker in 2024: Thanks to the card’s travel insurance, I got a $280 check after running into flight trouble and getting stranded.
Throw in breakfast credits at a wide range of Hilton properties thanks to the Gold elite status the card automatically offers — and the meals at Amex Centurion Lounges (voted Best Credit Card Lounge Network in the 2024 TPG Awards) while traveling — and my savings with the card far eclipsed the admittedly hefty annual fee. Just remember, enrollment is required for select benefits.
*Uber Cash available on U.S. purchases; your Amex Plat has to be added to your Uber account and you can redeem with any Amex card. Walmart+ membership subject to auto-renewal; Plus Ups not included.
