Did you know you can earn points and miles for the shopping you already do online? And I don’t just mean a few points here and there — if you play your cards right, you can easily earn thousands of points that will help you travel farther.
Qualify for elite status
For me, the best place to do this is the American Airlines AAdvantage eShopping portal. You simply create an account and start shopping. I’m a big fan of the Chrome browser extension that notifies me about a points-earning opportunity for hard-to-earn Loyalty Points on AA.
For example, my adorable Corgi, Splenda, sheds in the most unadorable way. Samsung happened to be offering 3.5 AAdvantage miles per $1 spent, so my high-end vacuum ended up earning me 2,485 miles and Loyalty Points, helping me on my path to requalify for elite status with American plus miles to use for a flight.
And now, with the holiday season upon us, shopping portals have a lot of elevated offers and big bonuses for the shopping you’ll likely do anyway. You can frequently order online and pick up at your nearest store, all while still earning points and miles.
Supercharge earnings on travel bookings
You can also even book travel and earn points through shopping portals. Right now, with American’s shopping portal, you can earn 1.5 AA miles when you book Hilton hotels. With this one Hilton booking, you could earn AA miles through the portal, Hilton points for the stay and, depending on how you pay, even more points through your card (i.e., Amex points if you go that route, or even more Hilton points if you pay with a Hilton cobranded card).
Get $40, give $40
You don’t even have to have an airline affiliation to earn on online shopping. Sites like Rakuten do the same — and right now, you can earn a $40 bonus by joining Rakuten and shopping online at thousands of retailers. Once you join, you can share your referral code, and your friends or family members can also earn $40.
It might sound confusing, but I promise it’s simple — and these guides will help you learn more in no time:
