But also like their personal counterparts, these two cards have some important differences. Here’s how to decide between the two.
If you have large business expenses and want luxury travel perks, the Amex Business Platinum is for you. It earns 1.5 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on key business expenses, like purchases at electronic goods retailers and shipping providers, as well as on purchases of $5,000 or more (on up to $1 million of these purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar). It also comes with comprehensive airport lounge access and over $1,000 in available annual statement credits that can easily justify the $695 annual fee (see rates and fees ).
If you want to choose your own bonus categories, the Amex Business Gold is your better option. With it, you’ll earn 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent in your top two eligible categories each billing cycle (on up to $150,000 in combined purchases each calendar year, then 1 point per dollar). These categories include purchases at U.S. restaurants and U.S. gas stations and for select advertising. The card also comes with up to $20 in monthly statement credits for eligible U.S. purchases at FedEx, Grubhub and office supply stores as well as a monthly Walmart+ membership credit, which can help offset the $375 annual fee (see rates and fees).
Regardless of which card you choose, you’ll earn valuable Membership Rewards points and get key tools to help your business run smoothly.
Plus, right now is a great time to add one to your wallet, since both the Amex Business Platinum and Amex Business Gold are offering elevated welcome bonuses — and you might find that you’re targeted for an even higher offer through CardMatch.
The Amex Business Platinum is offering 150,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $20,000 on eligible purchases in your first three months of card membership, while the Amex Business Gold is offering 100,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $15,000 on eligible purchases within the first three months of card membership.
