One of the best ways to maximize your credit card points and miles is to make use of transfer bonuses to airline and hotel partners.
And right now, American Express cardmembers have a great bonus opportunity: 30% bonuses on transfers for Avios, the award currency used by several airlines in Europe — and a growing list of carriers worldwide.
Eligible Amex members can currently transfer Membership Rewards points at a 1:1.3 ratio to British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus and Aer Lingus AerClub.
That means 1,000 Amex points will become 1,300 Avios upon making the transfer. Usually, these transfers only happen at a 1:1 ratio.
This can open up all sorts of opportunities for future award travel, particularly since some airlines, like British Airways and Iberia, still use distance-based award charts, making the number of miles you’ll need for a redemption a lot more predictable than what you’ll find on others (such as U.S. carriers) that have gone to dynamic pricing.
You can find business-class redemptions between the U.S. East Coast and certain European cities for as few as 27,000 Avios one-way — and you’d only need around 21,000 Amex points for the redemption thanks to this transfer bonus.
The points I’ve earned in 2024 just by dining out with my American Express® Gold Card would cover a round trip!
