Aviation history in your wallet

by Nick Ewen, Editor-in-chief

It’s back! After almost two years, Delta Air Lines and American Express have launched new, limited-edition versions of the Delta Reserve cards made (in part) from retired Boeing 747 aircraft.

The new designs — available on the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card — use components from a pair of 747s to make up roughly a third of the card, which is emblazoned with various stats from the aircraft’s lifespan.

I got the original 747 card in 2022, and I continue to geek out whenever I use it.

New applicants can receive the following welcome bonus if they meet the spending requirements:

Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card — Earn 60,000 bonus miles when you spend $5,000 on purchases on the card in the first six months.
Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business American Express Card — Earn 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $10,000 on purchases on the card in the first six months.

But this time, even more customers may be eligible.

That’s because, in addition to new applicants, existing cardmembers with other Delta Amex cards can acquire the limited-edition 747 card by upgrading to either Reserve card. And in doing so, you may be eligible for a one-time upgrade bonus.

Of course, the benefits of these cards go far beyond just the sleek new designs — including access to Delta Sky Clubs when flying on Delta along with an annual companion certificate upon renewal (requires payment of taxes and fees), valid for select flights in the U.S., the Caribbean and Central America. The card benefits were also just refreshed earlier this year.
