As I’ve proclaimed in this newsletter and across TPG channels, I refuse to check a bag. It’s not that I am particularly concerned about losing my luggage; rather, I simply cannot be bothered to waste time waiting for my luggage upon arrival at the airport.
If you lost your bag last year, you might be surprised to learn that 99.5% of once-lost checked and carry-on bags were reunited with their owners in 2023, per a report recently released by the Unclaimed Baggage Store. That means nearly 33,000 bags were left behind containing more than 2 million items.

If you insist on checking a bag, as I recognize that many of you do, just promise me that you will not do so without using an Apple AirTag. Though these coin-size devices might seem like old news, I routinely inform individuals of them throughout my travels, suggesting some travelers are still unaware.
In case you missed it, Apple AirTags use Bluetooth to track your suitcases via compatible Apple devices such as iPhones and iPads. AirTags have helped many TPG readers and staffers alike recoup their delayed and temporarily lost bags and thus are simply a nonnegotiable if you’re checking a bag in 2024.
