AIRBNB WORKAROUNDS (AND DEALS) ON THE RISE

by Andrew Kunesh, Senior Reporter, Cards & Loyalty

Many travelers (present company included) flocked to Airbnb during the first year of the pandemic, as it was a more comfortable way to travel: You could have control over an entire home, have more room to spread out when traveling with your family and it often ended up costing less than smaller accommodations at a hotel.

But folks are getting a little fed up, too. Airbnb cleaning fees are sometimes several hundred dollars for even a single-night stay. Sometimes you have to clean the place yourself even with exorbitant service fees — and let’s not get started on the risk of rowdy guests. A new report out this month shows people are tired of all the rules, charges and bad experiences and are either migrating back to hotels or booking directly with hosts to avoid all those charges.

We looked into a few listings and found you could find the same house for lower nightly rates than on Airbnb or Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy by looking to lesser-known platforms like Vacasa and Rent by Owner — sometimes as much as $350 a night less! Shop around before you book this summer, everyone. There’s no need to break the travel bank!
