Dream team, dream redemptions

by Becky Blaine, Managing Editor, Newsletters

As we all wait on pins and needles to see what offers will be revealed today when Chase officially launches the revamped Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the brand-new Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business℠, let’s pass the time with a bit of fun.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points are one of our team’s favorite currencies because they’re so valuable — and even more so when transferred to one of Chase’s hotel or airline partners. So, in anticipation of whatever Chase will share today, here are some of the TPG Newsletter team’s favorite ways they have used Chase points in the last year.

Summer booked British Airways business-class seats for her whole family to and from Europe, as BA is very generous when it comes to releasing enough business-class seats for the whole family. These cost 90,000 Avios each way from Houston to London, but she uses transfer bonuses (like the current 30% bonus from Chase Ultimate Rewards to British Airways Club), which knocks that award price down to around 70,000 points each (plus taxes and fees) — making for a great deal, in addition to a fun and restful trip.
Zach unlocked incredible value by transferring 105,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to World of Hyatt to book a three-night stay at the Park Hyatt Kyoto, one of Japan’s most luxurious hotels. Had he paid cash, this bucket-list-worthy getaway would’ve cost a jaw-dropping $8,919.31. All that luxury, with a small dent to his wallet (excluding the toro and wagyu).
Becky transferred 116,000 Chase points for a tropical Hawaiian escape — four nights at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa for 29,000 World of Hyatt points per night (rates are often $600-plus per night). Award stays also enjoy waived resort fees of $49 per night, giving her an additional savings of $196.
Fianeli turned 29,000 Chase points into a dream come true. After taking advantage of a 40% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic last fall, she was able to score a round-trip premium economy flight to Manchester, England. The reason? To witness the once-in-a-generation Oasis reunion in the band’s hometown. A few bucks in taxes, sure, but priceless for the most mind-blowing night of her music-loving life. “Champagne Supernova,” indeed.
Colin also took advantage of the 40% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic and booked lie-flat business-class tickets to London in March for just 21,000 Chase points apiece. (Those swanky seats can go for about $3,400 if you’re paying cash.) He also spent 17 nights in Hyatt hotels over the last year using points he transferred from Chase, including a night at the new (and stunning!) Park Hyatt London River Thames.
