However, the story that has really captured the aviation headlines this week is the U.S. government shutdown, which has finally brought some of the passenger-unfriendly disruptions that were feared from the beginning.
What’s next? No one knows, though it seems safe to say that disruptions to the system will increase until the shutdown ends.
Now to Southwest Airlines. The carrier is well into a dramatic evolution that only feels like it’s changing everything we ever knew about the carrier. Some updates — such as checked bags no longer flying free, for example — have already taken effect.
However, the bigger ones now looming — things like assigned seats and new airport lounges — could determine how much friction awaits Southwest’s broader overhaul. TPG Senior Aviation Reporter Sean Cudahy breaks down the remaining changes still to come that will constitute “the true Southwest Airlines reboot.”
United and JetBlue’s partnership began two weeks ago and was highly anticipated. It’s undoubtedly a welcome addition for flyers of the two airlines, though some loyalists were left unmoved by some of the program’s earning and redeeming values.
