There is a fun new addition to the New York City hotel scene.

Hilton has opened a Motto hotel in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. This is only the third property Hilton has opened under this brand, which was introduced in 2018.

These micro hotels in urban destinations were designed to compete with hostels by offering small, affordably priced rooms.

There are two other Motto hotels currently open in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, and there are about a dozen others in development, including one in New York’s Times Square and cities including Boston; Dublin; Lima, Peru; Rotterdam, Netherlands; San Diego; Savannah, Georgia; and Tulum, Mexico.

How to book

The 374-room Motto by Hilton New York City Chelsea, which is located on 24th Street near Madison Square Park, will cost about $150 a night on average. A room on Jan. 23 is priced on the lower end at $125, and on the higher side on Feb. 26 it costs $229. You can also book it for 44,000 Hilton Honors points. The hotel has a full-service restaurant, craft bar and lounge called Bar Cicchetti on the ground floor of the 42-story building.

Rooms at hotels under the Motto brand are small, with an average size of 163 square feet. Let’s be realistic, though, most hotel rooms in NYC are small.

Up to three rooms can be connected for friends and family traveling together, and there are flexible sleeping setups that include bunk beds and king beds that fold into the wall. Rooms feature smart technology that allows guests to stream shows and adjust the temperature and lighting through the Hilton app.
