Refer a friend for these cards

Eligible cardmembers of select American Express cards can earn +5 rewards per dollar spent at U.S. restaurants for three months on up to $25,000 in purchases if a friend applies for a new card through their referral link and gets approved. The existing customer will receive the bonus as 5 additional Membership Rewards points, 5% additional cash back or 5 additional miles for every dollar spent — depending on the cardmember’s eligible card.

Plus, these rewards are in addition to whatever you may already be earning on dining from your card, and it’s also on top of the standard, one-time bonus you can receive if your referral results in an approval.

The offer is only for a limited time, so your friend must apply by June 8, 2022, using your link in order for you to qualify.

Many popular Amex cards are eligible for this offer, including ones that already offer a solid return on dining purchases. Here’s a snapshot of participating cards:

For example, the Amex Gold card already offers 4 points per dollar spent at restaurants — which means that you could wind up earning a total of 9 points per dollar (4 as the standard earning rate plus an additional 5 at U.S. restaurants) on these purchases for the next three months after a friend applies and is approved for a card through your referral link.

How to refer a friend

There are two ways to refer a friend to apply for an eligible American Express card. You can share your referral link through SMS text messaging or use the email referral option located in your online account.

From the American Express app on your smartphone or other device, you can easily find these options by logging into your account, clicking on the account icon at the far right of the screen and scrolling to the bottom of the page under Membership. There, you’ll find the option to “Refer a Friend.” Click on that button to be taken to your offer.

Here, you can access the terms for your referral bonus and your friend’s welcome offer (which may vary by cardmember).

Note that this limited-time referral offer is in addition to the standard referral bonus you’d receive. In the above scenario on the Amex Gold Card, you could earn 5 additional Membership Rewards points on dining at U.S. restaurants along with a one-time bonus of 10,000 points (up to the cap of 55,000 points per calendar year) for your referral if your friend is ultimately approved.

However, existing cardholders may see targeted offers. Be sure to check your own account for complete details on what’s available to you.

And your friend or family member isn’t even limited to the card from which you sent the referral. They can opt to apply for any participating American Express card. If they’re approved for a different card, you’ll still earn the referral bonus.

This offer is particularly appealing to anyone who’s been considering a new Amex Gold or Platinum card in the near future.
