Last chance to support your favorite restaurants and earn bonus rewards (or additional cash back) with American Express

Jun 6, 2022

One thing I missed the most over the last two years is dining out at my favorite restaurants and catching up with friends. But as we close in on summer, I can’t wait to return to my favorite restaurants — and (of course) earn bonus rewards when it’s time to pay.

And if you’re an existing American Express cardmember and want to earn even more on these purchases, you have just a couple of days left to utilize a terrific offer.

Through June 8, 2022, eligible cardmembers of select American Express cards can earn bonus rewards at U.S. restaurants when a friend applies (and is ultimately approved) for a new card through your personalized referral link.

Refer a friend for these cards

Eligible cardmembers of select American Express cards can earn +5 rewards per dollar spent at U.S. restaurants for three months on up to $25,000 in purchases if a friend applies for a new card through their referral link and gets approved. The existing customer will receive the bonus as 5 additional Membership Rewards points, 5% additional cash back or 5 additional miles for every dollar spent — depending on the cardmember’s eligible card.

Plus, these rewards are in addition to whatever you may already be earning on dining from your card, and it’s also on top of the standard, one-time bonus you can receive if your referral results in an approval.

The offer is only for a limited time, so your friend must apply by June 8, 2022, using your link in order for you to qualify.

Many popular Amex cards are eligible for this offer, including ones that already offer a solid return on dining purchases. Here’s a snapshot of participating cards:

  • American Express® Green Card.
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express.
  • American Express® Gold Card.
  • Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express.
  • Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express.
  • American Express Cash Magnet®.
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card.
  • Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card.
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card.
  • Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express.
  • Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express.

For example, the Amex Gold card already offers 4 points per dollar spent at restaurants — which means that you could wind up earning a total of 9 points per dollar (4 as the standard earning rate plus an additional 5 at U.S. restaurants) on these purchases for the next three months after a friend applies and is approved for a card through your referral link.

How to refer a friend

There are two ways to refer a friend to apply for an eligible American Express card. You can share your referral link through SMS text messaging or use the email referral option located in your online account.

From the American Express app on your smartphone or other device, you can easily find these options by logging into your account, clicking on the account icon at the far right of the screen and scrolling to the bottom of the page under Membership. There, you’ll find the option to “Refer a Friend.” Click on that button to be taken to your offer.

Here, you can access the terms for your referral bonus and your friend’s welcome offer (which may vary by cardmember).

Note that this limited-time referral offer is in addition to the standard referral bonus you’d receive. In the above scenario on the Amex Gold Card, you could earn 5 additional Membership Rewards points on dining at U.S. restaurants along with a one-time bonus of 10,000 points (up to the cap of 55,000 points per calendar year) for your referral if your friend is ultimately approved.

However, existing cardholders may see targeted offers. Be sure to check your own account for complete details on what’s available to you.

And your friend or family member isn’t even limited to the card from which you sent the referral. They can opt to apply for any participating American Express card. If they’re approved for a different card, you’ll still earn the referral bonus.

This offer is particularly appealing to anyone who’s been considering a new Amex Gold or Platinum card in the near future.

When you refer a friend or family member to get a new Amex Gold or Platinum Card through this limited-time offer, they can earn more through a special welcome offer. New cardmembers who apply through a referral link by June 8, 2022 will receive the following (if they are ultimately approved):

  • Amex Platinum: Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards points after they use their new card to make $6,000 in purchases within their first six months of card membership. Plus, they can earn 10 points per dollar spent at restaurants worldwide on up to $25,000 in eligible purchases during the first six months of card membership. Terms apply.
  • Amex Gold: Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points after they use their new card to make $4,000 in purchases within their first six months of card membership. Plus, they can receive 20% back as a statement credit on purchases made at restaurants worldwide up to $250 back during the first 12 months of card membership. Terms apply.

In any case, both you and your referrals can enjoy additional rewards on dining purchases when you utilize this limited-time offer.

Bottom line

For a limited time, eligible cardmembers of select American Express cards can earn additional rewards at U.S. restaurants for three months if a friend or family member applies for a new card through their referral link and gets approved. This is in addition to the standard, one-time referral bonus offered on your card, and the +5 rewards are in addition to what you already earn on your card.

However, time is running out on this exciting opportunity. For you to receive this offer, you must refer a friend, and that friend must apply for a new card through your referral link by June 8, 2022. If they are approved, you will begin earning +5 rewards at U.S. restaurants for three months, up to $25,000 in purchases.

And if your loved one applies (and is approved) for an Amex Gold or Platinum Card through your link, they’ll enjoy both a standard welcome offer along with additional rewards on their own restaurant purchases.

Spread the word about your favorite American Express cards today before it’s too late — and begin earning those additional rewards for your next trip.
