I recently stayed at a brand-new Hyatt House in South Africa, the Hyatt House Johannesburg Sandton. This World of Hyatt Category 1 property, which also happens to be the first Hyatt House in Africa, cost around $67 per night on the two sets of dates I wanted to stay.

So, I was happy to book some relatively inexpensive nights toward requalifying for World of Hyatt Globalist status.

When I checked my account activity after my first stay at the property, I’d actually earned more points than I’d expected. I knew this stay was just before the Bonus Journeys promotion started, so I was surprised to see I’d earned 3,524 Hyatt points on $234 of qualifying spending.

In looking at the details, I noticed a “January 2022 Opening Bonus” of 2,000 points. Then I remembered that Hyatt offers 500 bonus points on qualifying nights at new hotels. Since Hyatt doesn’t require its members to register for this promotion, I’d unknowingly took part.

Perhaps you, too, have forgotten about this promotion. Or maybe you never knew about it. In either case, here’s what you should know about this World of Hyatt promotion, including what properties currently participate.

This promotion is simple: World of Hyatt members get 500 bonus points for each qualifying night stayed at select new Hyatt hotels. To earn the bonus points, you must stay during a set offer period, which typically lasts for a few months after the hotel opens. Also, note that you’ll only earn the bonus points if your checkout date is during the offer period for your hotel.

To get the bonus points, you must provide your World of Hyatt number when you check in and either pay an eligible rate or redeem a free night award (which includes redeeming Hyatt points). If you book multiple rooms during one stay, you’ll only earn bonus points for one room.

But, as I confirmed on my second stay at the Hyatt House Johannesburg Sandton, you can earn the new hotel bonus alongside other bonuses, such as those earned with the Bonus Journeys promotion.

The terms of this promotion note that it may take three to four weeks for the bonus points to appear in your account. However, Hyatt posted the new hotel bonus points at the same time as other points on my recent stays.

The 500 Hyatt points per night you’d get when booking an eligible rate or free night are worth about $9 based on TPG’s valuations. So, this promotion may be the tiebreaker next time you’re considering where to stay in a location with a new Hyatt hotel.

Bottom line

Staying at a new Hyatt has perks beyond just earning 500 bonus points per night.

You can stay in new rooms with fresh furnishings; however, new hotels may also still be working through some issues and may not have everything on-site completely functional. For example, during my stays at the new Hyatt House Johannesburg Sandton, the hotel was still unable to serve alcohol.

I found it fun to stay at a new hotel, so I plan to periodically check the list of new Hyatts when booking future stays. If you’re considering a stay at Africa’s first Hyatt House, know that it is located north of Johannesburg in the Sandton suburb. If you have a car during your stay — or are happy taking Uber to get around — the location is fine. But, if you prefer to walk, there’s not much near the hotel besides offices and housing. And, despite inquiring at check-in, I didn’t get an upgrade from the base room I’d booked on either of my stays as a Globalist.
