Halloween is next week, and Southwest Airlines is celebrating with a Monster Sale: Travelers can book one-way flights starting at just $49, no costume required.

Book your travel by Thursday, Oct. 25, for flights occurring between Nov. 29 and March 8, 2023; there is no promo code to enter.

Based on a test search conducted for this story, most of the sale fares cost more than the advertised price of $49 each way, depending on the route.

Maximize your purchase

If you book this deal, don’t forget to use a card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases. Southwest frequent fliers should consider the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card to earn 3 points per dollar on Southwest® purchases. Otherwise, try the Citi Premier® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve for 3 points per dollar on airfare or the American Express® Gold Card for 3 points per dollar on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel. Alternatively, you could use the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card which earns 2 points per dollar on travel. See this post for more ways to maximize airfare purchases.

Bottom line

Book this deal by end of the day on Oct. 27, or be prepared to be ghosted by this Halloween sale until next year.

Happy Halloween flight hunting!

Why We Chose It

There's a lot to love about the Amex Gold card. It's been a fan favorite during the pandemic because of its fantastic rewards rate on restaurants (that includes takeout and delivery in the U.S.!) and U.S. supermarkets. If you're hitting the skies soon, you'll also earn bonus points on travel. Paired with up to $120 in Uber Cash (for U.S. Uber rides or Uber Eats orders) and up to $120 in annual dining statement credits at eligible partners, there's no reason that the foodie shouldn't add this card to their wallet. Enrollment required.

Pros

  • 4x on dining at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets (on the first $25,000 in purchases per calendar year; then 1x)
  • 3x on flights booked directly with the airline or with Amex Travel
  • Welcome bonus of 60,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first six months

Cons

  • Weak on travel outside of flights and everyday spending bonus categories
  • Not as useful for those living outside the U.S.
  • Some may have trouble using Uber/food credits
  • Few travel perks and protections
