This particular flight is available in four Delta cabins, starting at 80,000 miles plus $112 round trip in Delta's main cabin. You can see above that the cash price for the same flight is $1,824, giving you more than 2 cents per mile in value. TPG values Delta SkyMiles at 1.57 cents per mile as of February 2022, so going the SkyMiles route on this specific trip would give you a nice return.

All Delta flights between the U.S. and Australia include two free checked bags and each fare type included in this deal can be changed without a fee. SkyMiles members can change or cancel award tickets without a redeposit or change fee for travel originating from North America to anywhere in the world, excluding basic economy fares. Mileage differences, taxes and fees may apply.

Maximize your purchase

Don’t forget to use a card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases. They include The Platinum Card® from American Express (5 points per dollar on airfare booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel), on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year; Citi Prestige® Card (5 points per dollar on airfare); Citi Premier® Card; Chase Sapphire Reserve (3 points per dollar on airfare); American Express® Gold Card (3 points per dollar on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel); and the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card (2 points per dollar on travel). Or, consider a Delta card such as the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card for 2 miles per dollar or the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card for 3 miles per dollar on eligible Delta purchases made directly with Delta. Check out this post for more on maximizing airfare purchases.

Bottom line

This is a wide-reaching deal with flights departing from across the U.S. to Sydney, with award availability in all four Delta cabins. Be sure to book your travel by March 11.
