Name: American Express® Gold Card
Brand: American Express

Small-business owners seeking a business card have plenty of great options to choose from. But if you're looking for a business card that offers premium perks, you might want to consider two top options: the Capital One Venture X Business and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express.

Both cards earn their own respective transferable currency that business owners can use to book travel. The Venture X Business earns Capital One miles, while the Business Platinum earns Membership Rewards points.

The Venture X Business has a $395 annual fee, and the Business Platinum has a $895 annual fee (see rates and fees).

At first glance, you may assume the Business Platinum is the superior card since it has almost double the annual fee, but the Venture X Business carries its weight and even beats the Business Platinum in some categories.

Let's dive into which premium business card is right for your wallet.

New applicants for the Venture X Business can earn up to 300,000 bonus miles and a $1,000 travel credit: 150,000 bonus miles after spending $40,000 on purchases in the first four months from account opening, plus an additional 150,000 bonus miles and a $1,000 Capital One Business Travel credit (to use in the first cardholder year) after spending $120,000 total on purchases in the first four months from account opening.

TPG's October 2026 valuations peg Capital One miles at 1.85 cents apiece, making this welcome offer worth up to $6,550 (including the travel credit).

New cardmembers for the Amex Business Platinum can find out their offer and see if they're eligible for as high as 300,000 bonus points after spending $20,000 on purchases in the first three months of card membership. Welcome offers vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.

TPG's October 2026 valuations peg Membership Rewards points at 2 cents apiece, making this offer worth up to $6,000.

Winner: Amex Business Platinum.

Venture X Business vs. Amex Business Platinum benefits

The benefits of these cards are where they really shine.

Shared benefits

Both cards have a similar standout benefit in lounge access. With the Venture X Business, you have access to Capital One's growing network of lounges (four lounges and one Capital One Landing). Plus, you'll receive a complimentary Priority Pass membership. The primary cardholder can bring in two guests for no additional charge.

With the Amex Business Platinum, you'll have access to the Global Lounge Collection, which includes entry to Centurion Lounges, Delta Sky Clubs*****, Escape lounges, Plaza Premium lounges and select Lufthansa lounges. You'll also receive a Priority Pass Select membership. Guest access varies by lounge, with some requiring a fee for guests and some not.

*****Eligible Platinum Card members will receive 10 visits per eligible Platinum Card, per year to the Delta Sky Club or to Grab and Go when traveling on a same-day Delta-operated flight.

With the Amex Business Platinum Card, members also receive:

Up to $200 statement credit for airline fees (including incidental charges) per calendar year
Up to $219 statement credit per calendar year for a Clear+ membership (subject to auto-renewal)
Up to $200 annual Hilton statement credit on eligible purchases (up to $50 per quarter), separate enrollment in Hilton for Business is required

35% airline bonus when redeeming with Membership Rewards points via Amex Travel (receive up to 1 million points back each calendar year; will only apply to the airline that a cardmember selects for their annual up to $200 airline fee statement credit, regardless of fare class)
Some benefits require enrollment

The Amex Business Platinum comes with substantially more statement credits, but not all business owners may be able to use them, as some are quite niche. I use the Dell credit for any of my business tech needs, such as storage and monitors, and the Adobe credit on a Creative Cloud subscription.

Additionally, the Amex airline credit allows more flexibility, but keep in mind that it's limited to just one eligible airline each calendar year. Meanwhile, the Venture X Business' travel credit has to be redeemed through Capital One Business Travel.

With the Business Platinum, you'll also receive automatic hotel and rental car elite status and up to $219 each calendar year toward a Clear+ membership, which can speed up airport security. Lastly, the Business Platinum has baggage delay insurance***, which isn't available on the Venture X Business.

Winner: Amex Business Platinum, as it offers numerous statement credits, automatic elite status and unparalleled lounge access. The Venture X Business, however, has one simple credit that can cover almost all of its annual fee.

Earning rewards on the Venture X Business vs. Amex Business Platinum

Both cards offer bonus earnings for travel booked through their respective travel portals. The Amex Business Platinum offers an additional earning category beyond that, while the Venture X Business earns more rewards per dollar on everyday spending.

The Venture X Business earns:

10 miles per dollar spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Business Travel
5 miles per dollar spent on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Business Travel
2 miles per dollar spent on every other purchase

Meanwhile, the Amex Business Platinum earns:

5 points per dollar spent on flights and prepaid lodgings booked with Amex Travel
2 points per dollar spent on purchases of $5,000 or more and in select business categories in the U.S. — construction material and hardware suppliers, electronics goods retailers, software and cloud system providers and shipping providers* — on up to $2 million of purchases in a calendar year, then 1 point per dollar
1 point per dollar spent on other purchases

*Select shipping providers beginning Feb. 17, 2027.

The Venture X Business will earn more rewards on most purchases and has double the earning rate on prepaid hotels booked through its respective travel portal.

Winner: Venture X Business, as it earns at least 2 miles per dollar spent on all purchases, regardless of the amount or bonus category.

Redeeming rewards on the Venture X Business vs. Amex Business Platinum

Both cards offer similar ways to redeem their rewards, including for a statement credit, gift cards or to cover purchases. However, with any of these redemption methods on either card, you will get a value below TPG's valuation of either currency.

Transferring points or miles to partners is the best way to redeem them for maximum value.

With the Venture X Business, you can redeem miles at 1 cent apiece to cover travel purchases or book new travel through Capital One Business Travel.

Emirates Boeing 777 business class cabin — BEN SMITHSON/THE POINTS GUY

With the Amex Business Platinum Card, members can redeem points at 1 cent per point for flights booked through Amex Travel and hotels reserved via Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts. All other travel booked through Amex Travel is redeemed at 0.7 cents per point.

Cardmembers also have access to a Pay with Points bonus. If you book an eligible business- or first-class flight on any airline or economy flights (only with one designated airline) with points through Amex Travel, you will get 35% of the points back (up to 1 million points per calendar year).

Note that this will only apply to the airline that a cardmember selects for their annual up to $200 airline fee statement credit, regardless of fare class.

I used this once a few years ago to book a business-class flight from Europe to Asia for less than 50,000 points.

Winner: Tie. With the Venture X Business, you can redeem miles for all travel purchases at 1 cent apiece. However, the Amex Business Platinum lets you receive 35% of your points back if you book an eligible flight through Amex Travel (up to 1 million points per calendar year).

Transferring rewards on the Venture X Business vs. Amex Business Platinum

Both cards earn rewards that can be transferred to numerous transfer partners to receive maximum value.

With the Venture X Business, you can transfer miles to one of Capital One's 15-plus transfer partners, including Air Canada or JetBlue. Most partners transfer at a 1:1 ratio.

Ben Smithson, TPG's senior points and miles writer, recently transferred 77,000 Capital One miles to Air France-KLM Flying Blue to book his husband a business-class ticket on board Air France's newest business-class product on the Airbus A350-900 from Incheon International Airport (ICN) in Seoul, South Korea, to London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) and then on to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG).

JetBlue Mint seat — ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

With the Amex Business Platinum, you can transfer points to one of Amex's 21 airline and hotel partners, including Delta or Hilton. Most partners transfer at a 1:1 ratio.

I typically transfer my Amex Membership Rewards points to Delta to take advantage of the carrier's frequent award flash sales. I recently saw one of these sales, which included round-trip flights from the West Coast to Tokyo for just 34,000 SkyMiles.

Additionally, both cards have partners in all three major alliances: Oneworld, SkyTeam and Star Alliance. As such, you can use any of them to book domestic flights.

Winner: Amex Business Platinum, as it offers more transfer partners than the Venture X Business.

Should I get the Venture X Business or the Amex Business Platinum?

If you want to get lounge access and earn at least 2 miles per dollar spent on all purchases or are looking for a lower annual fee, you should opt for the Venture X Business. If you want more extensive lounge access, automatic elite status and can use most or all of its statement credits, you should opt for the Amex Business Platinum.

Bottom line

The Venture X Business and the Amex Business Platinum are excellent business rewards cards. While the Amex Business Platinum has more benefits and statement credits, the Venture X Business is an excellent option with a much lower annual fee.

Either or both cards could be great additions for your business, as both provide premium perks and lounge access. With both cards' welcome bonuses, you could have a healthy stash of rewards for your business.
