Every month at TPG, we create a list of the craziest things flyers have tried to get through the golden gates at TSA checkpoints. The lists range from outright funny things like pizza, to quite frightening things like a hand grenade or even a knife set. For those who go through the TSA checkpoints often, you've become accustomed to seeing the infamous recycling cans filled with hundreds of plastic bottles, since liquids over 3.4 ounces aren't allowed.
When the TSA officers ask you to recycle your drink bottles, are you really obligated to do so? Well, the liquids in the bottle have to go, but there's no rule against keeping the bottle for future use. It's becoming more common to see free purified water dispensers in many airports to fill up upon passing security.
Furthermore, it's quite convenient to store your drink in a closed container while on board as compared to the plastic non-lid cups we're used to seeing — especially if you encounter turbulence. Next time you fly, don't discard that empty bottle as you pass security, as it might save you a few dollars from buying an overpriced replacement in the terminal.
