I am pretty agnostic when it comes to hotel loyalty. I’m much more likely to choose a hotel based on its location or whether it has rooms with enough space for my three kids than on its brand.
As such, it can take a while before I earn enough points for a free hotel stay. That is why I prefer using free night rewards. There are several ways to earn free hotel night rewards, and they can be worth hundreds of dollars each.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to earn free hotel nights.
For example, I get a free night award worth up to 35,000 points every year after my account anniversary with my Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card. The annual fee is only $95, and right now, new cardholders can earn five free night awards after spending $3,000 on eligible purchases within the first three months from account opening. (Just remember certain Marriott hotels also have resort fees.) Plus, you’ll get up to $100 in statement credits after you spend $500 on eligible airline purchases ($50 semiannually).
Look for free night promos: IHG, Hilton and Marriott are the three major hotel brands that offer a free night when you redeem points for four or five consecutive nights at one hotel. Marriott’s is the least restrictive; Hilton requires you to be a Silver elite member or above, and IHG’s benefit is only available to eligible cardholders.
Even though it might take time for me to earn enough points for four or five award nights, being able to tack on a free night at the end makes the deal even sweeter.
Hyatt Brand Explorer: This one is my favorite ways — and arguably the easiest way — to earn free hotel nights. All you have to do to get it is stay at various Hyatt brands, and you can automatically earn up to six free nights. I’ve already earned one free night, and I’m working on my second.
