While I always prefer to stay at hotels within my preferred loyalty programs, this distinction is of no importance to my kids.
Their criteria have more to do with a hotel’s activities, theming, the view from the balcony and what’s on the breakfast buffet. (Honestly, I feel the same, but if I can earn points alongside my morning waffle, all the better.)
This came in handy recently when my kids discovered the Big Cypress Lodge in Memphis.
If you’ve ever driven through Memphis, you’ve probably seen it because, well, it’s impossible to miss. Big Cypress Lodge is housed inside a 321-foot-tall pyramid on the banks of the Mississippi River.
Inside Big Cypress Lodge, you’ll find the world’s largest Bass Pro Shops location, an underwater-themed bowling alley, several aquariums, loads of kid-friendly activities, a 28-story glass elevator ride that takes you to a restaurant and observation deck, and 103 outdoor-themed guest rooms.
Once the mysteries of the pyramid were revealed to me, I knew we had to stay there.
Since I’m a Chase Sapphire Preferred® cardholder, I can get the best redemption rate when booking through Chase Travel. Thanks to Chase’s new Points Boost feature, a $294 nightly rate at this hotel would cost me 18,262 points — a redemption rate of about 1.6 cents per point. While that may not be the most valuable way I could use those points, it sure beats the flat 1-cent-per-point rate I’d get elsewhere.
Here are some more tips for using your points in a way that makes the most sense for you:
