I hope you’ve had a better travel week than I have!
Nothing ends a 12-day vacation quite like getting stranded thanks to a flight cancellation.
After a return flight from Greece to New York, my connecting flight home to North Carolina got the axe this week in the midst of all these summer storms.
Considering today could be one of the busiest travel days ever, I thought I’d share what I do when I get stuck:
Head right to the airline’s app to rebook: I was flying with American Airlines, which offered me a bunch of alternative flights. I was able to book myself on a new flight about 15 seconds after I learned about the cancellation.
Refund or no refund? However, I wasn’t required to take American’s rebooking offer. You’re entitled to a refund when a flight is canceled or significantly delayed … though there’s one really important thing to consider before you ask for one.
Book the hotel: Because my connection was going to be the last flight of the night, I quickly grabbed myself a hotel room before other stranded passengers scooped them up.
Shouldn’t the airline pay? If the cancellation or delay was the airline’s “fault,” there are a bunch of things you can ask for. It gets a little more dicey when it’s weather-related.
Keep the receipts: Since I have travel insurance coverage through The Platinum Card® from American Express, you can bet I’ll be filing a travel insurance claim to recover costs I incurred (wish me luck!). Here are some of TPG’s favorite travel cards that have insurance, which, for me, removes the financial stress of getting stranded.
