If you’re among the tens of thousands of TPG readers who jumped on one of the incredible credit card welcome offers we’ve seen in the past couple of months, you’re likely working on meeting the spending requirement for the bonus.
Failing to earn the welcome bonus can be a big letdown that leaves a huge chunk of your card’s first-year value on the table, so you may want to go into it with a strategy in mind.
To ensure you get to collect that sweet pile of points, we always recommend directing your spending in ways that will hit the requirement within the required time frame, without spending more than you normally would.
Here are a few of my favorite tricks for doing this:
Move all daily spending to your new card: Groceries, travel, dining, shopping. I don’t use other cards when I’m working toward a welcome bonus, even if they’d earn more in those categories. I stay focused on earning the bonus.
Pay your rent or mortgage. While paying these bills with a credit card may incur a transaction fee, it may be worth doing if it helps ensure you’ll get the bonus.
