It’s the most wonderful time of the year … for using up built-in credits on cards such as The Platinum Card® from American Express, that is, because many are based on a calendar year.
And this isn’t just true for existing cardholders. If you add an American Express Platinum to your wallet now, that means many of these credits are available for you to use up quickly in December, and then they refresh in January. That makes this the best time of the year to get the card and enjoy a quick double dip of almost $1,000 in value from just four credits in late 2024 and then again in early 2025.
Here is $485 in statement credits to be sure and use up by Dec. 31:
Up to $200 in annual hotel credit on prepaid Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection stays of two nights or more: It’s possible to use it on a 2025 booking as long as at least $200 is prepaid now*.
$50 Saks Fifth Avenue credit awarded every six months (January-June and July-December): Here are some suggestions on what to spend it on*.
The monthly $15 Uber credit increases to $35 for December — so this is the best month of the year for it — and remember, you can use it on Uber Eats, too.*
The Amex Platinum is currently offering 80,000 bonus Membership Rewards points after $8,000 in spending in the first six months of card membership. According to TPG’s December 2024 valuations, these points are worth $1,600.
