I’m not typically one to publicly humiliate anyone, but I would like to tell you a story. Last summer, two weeks before a planned trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, to review some hotels, my sweet mom realized her passport had expired.
At that time, with the passport renewal system still a bit of a mess, I thought the chances of getting her a passport in time for our trip were impossible. But with a little luck, patience and nonstop redialing, I was able to get her a last-minute appointment at the Houston passport office.
Of course, she also had to book a flight to Houston from her home on the other side of the state, get a hotel the day before to be in line as early as possible, and have detailed documents laying out her travel plans and why she needed a passport ASAP.
All this to say, the experience was not fun, it was not cheap and it was stressful for everyone. Check your passport expiration date now. And if you’re traveling with anyone else soon, tell them to check their passport, too.
In fact, it’s been a pretty interesting time for passports and the digital world. It was also announced last week that Android users can now store a digital passport in Google Wallet for use at select U.S. Transportation Security Administration checkpoints.
