Labor Day weekend is upon us, and with it, the unofficial end of summer. Sure, the peak summer travel season ended weeks ago in the eyes of airlines — and millions across the country — thanks to earlier and earlier school start dates.
Still, the weekend is shaping up to be a packed one at airports and destinations as travelers take advantage of lower airfare to sneak in one last summer trip.
Here are some travel tips to keep in mind this weekend:
No. 1: Get to the airport early Thursday and Friday: On Memorial Day weekend, both Thursday and Friday saw historic crowds at airports. Likewise, today and tomorrow could be the busiest days ahead of Labor Day weekend.
No. 2: Use the MyTSA app to plan ahead: If you don’t have TSA PreCheck, this app is a great way to plan how early to get to the airport. Keep in mind that summer 2024 brought the 10 busiest days ever at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints.
No. 3: Check for unused travel credits: Have an unused voucher or a $100 hotel credit from your travel credit card? Don’t leave money on the table! It’s the end of summer, so unless you have a fall getaway or a holiday trip planned, now could be a great time to use it.
No. 4: No Global Entry? Try Mobile Passport Control: Flying back to the U.S. without Global Entry? Mobile Passport Control is a great time-saving option for families, all on your phone.
No. 5: Travel insurance considerations: It’s prime hurricane season. If you’re headed to a storm-prone destination, the time to purchase a travel insurance plan is before a storm is named. Already have a travel credit card with insurance? Double-check to make sure you actually booked the trip with that card, which is typically required for coverage.
