You earn airline miles for flights and hotel points for hotel stays … or so the logic used to go.
These days, sprawling partnerships have given travelers many new ways to earn exactly the airline loyalty currency of their choosing.
Take JetBlue, for instance. This month, the airline announced a new partnership with home rental site Vrbo, which now allows you to earn TrueBlue points on that weeklong beach house reservation. Plus, spending on that home will help you earn Mosaic “tiles” toward elite status.
Also this month, Alaska Airlines made it possible to earn and redeem Mileage Plan miles on hotel and home rental stays through a new tie-up with Expedia.
It’s all part of a larger trend: Airlines want customers to use their loyalty programs beyond flying, and even beyond spending on an airline credit card.
But as with JetBlue and Alaska, Delta loyalists can also earn miles on hotel stays, vacation rentals, car rentals — and even some cruises booked through the airline’s portal.
What’s the downside? Typically, booking through a third-party site — whether it’s an airline portal or an online travel agency like Expedia or Booking.com — will keep you from earning hotel points or enjoying elite status perks like your World of Hyatt Globalist free breakfast.
But if your main goal is racking up miles for a swanky business-class redemption — or if you’re in hot pursuit of airline elite status — this growing list of non-air travel partnerships from airlines can help you get there.
