Applications open at 1 p.m. Eastern time daily, on a first-come, first-served basis. If you aren’t able to start your application that day, keep checking back to see if a slot opens up.
The agency will “gradually” begin opening the portal to more people over time.
Currently, Americans should expect six to eight weeks for routine service and two to three weeks for expedited service, online or by mail.
To renew online, you must meet specific qualifications, including being at least 25 years old with a passport issued between 2009 and 2015.
Your passport must also be set to expire within one year to renew online. But regardless of the renewal method, travelers should renew their passport a minimum of six months in advance since most countries require passports to be valid for six months at the time of entry.
