American Airlines AAdvantage miles and Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles can be hard to come by if you don’t regularly fly those airlines. But I’m going to let you in on a points and miles tip — a way to book flights on these carriers is through the British Airways Executive Club loyalty program using Avios.
Even if you have no plans to visit Europe this summer, the British Airways Executive Club loyalty program is worth your consideration — and it’s free to join!
Avios are easy to earn and use, and British Airways is a transfer partner of most major credit card programs, so even if you don’t fly British Airways, you can transfer credit card points to your Executive Club account.
While major U.S. loyalty programs have adopted dynamic award pricing with eye-watering rates on peak dates, British Airways has retained a sensible award chart. It is especially valuable for domestic short-haul hops on American and Alaska during peak periods, with flights starting at just 8,250 Avios (and off-peak flights starting at 4,750 Avios) plus a few dollars in fees and taxes on some routes, such as from New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).
Check out our story on four times it’s better to book American flights with Avios rather than AAdvantage miles, including nonstop economy flights from California to Hawaii from just 13,000 Avios and flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) for just 25,750 Avios (which would otherwise cost 35,000 AAdvantage miles).
If you want to travel to Europe, British Airways flies from an impressive 27 U.S. destinations to London and onward across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Flights from cities like Boston to London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) start at just 25,000 Avios plus 50 British pounds (about $64) each way.
